Feelings of depression and paranoia?

KATY - How can I lift my mood? I had a bout of severe depression last year within a week of this year (Feb 07) and was signed off work for a week as I couldn't stop crying and didn't want to leave the house. It has started again as of Sunday and I'm tired of feeling so miserable... I know I'm being moody, but I can't snap out of it... please help?

Answer:

First off...of course don't hesitate to talk to someone..doctor, counselor etc...venting is very helpful..and if you need meds or supplements to help...see what can be done.

That being said - You're allowed to be moody, depressed or any of the above...so stop feeling bad about that. What I suggest is that from where ever you stand now..(mood) try to reach for the next point of relief..moving up the scale to slowly feeling good. I have a 'bag of tricks' I keep around - when I feel lousy or something is not going my way...whether a big deal or a little deal. As for bag of tricks I mean a 'list' of things that make me feel good...no matter what. They may not work immediately to end my depression or fear or frustration... but they do help me feel just a little better..more like 'relief' even for a while. That's all you have to do.

So what could that list be? I have about a dozen DVD's that are all 'feel good' movies...in fact I just watched "last holiday" with Queen Latifah..(LOVE that movie)

So...
movie
good book
snack I love
baking something and giving it away
walk outside (nature is a 'natural' absorber of negativity...don't underestimate it)
music, favorite songs (walking on sunshine, katrina & the waves)
petting my cat
wandering in the dollar store
wandering in a bookstore
going to a fun coffee shop and treating myself to a flavored coffee
getting a manicure
do your own nails with a new nail polish
looking for a place to volunteer...(kids and old folks are always in need) contact your local United Way or look up online for your city
A good book-"Why Your Life Sucks" by alan cohen...fun and helpful too (not that your life sucks!!)

Do you see what I mean? Everyone's list will be different..but you have to start somewhere...don't look to leap immediately into absolute joy...but if you can start stepping towards it and look instead to where you want to be, instead of where you don't...you are on your way! The fact that you are asking for help is a good thing! :o)

Good luck
